Bhima-Koregaon: When new Dalit leadership faces off with Hindutva project

The educated Dalit doesn't just want a ride on the bus of democracy; it wants to be at the steering wheels

Maharashtra saw violent protests after clashes between Dalits and some Maratha groups in Bhima Koregaon. Dalits had gathered in Pune to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the battle of Bhima Koregaon. These clashes and the subsequent protests brought the focus back on Dalit assertion and its conflict with Hindutva politics. The writer analyses this conflict in this Business Standard Special.The determination and force of the response of the Dalits to the violence at the Bhima Koregaon has unsettled the BJP governments of the state of Maharashtra and the centre. It has also baffled the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. This time it has not been easy for the BJP and the governments to denounce the protests the way could do in the past. Previously the Student leaders of the JNU were successfully branded as anti-national. The students and teachers of the Ramjas college of the university of Delhi were also declared anti-national. Before them, the student unrest - mainly led by Dalits - at the central University of Hyderabad was condemned as casteist and anti national. This time the response from the centre’s of power has been slightly complex.

It is true that the RSS tried to blame the violence at the Bhima Koregaon on Umar Khalid and Jignesh Mevani. It did say that the Bharat tere tukde honge gang was responsible for the violence. But interestingly, this time this allegation could not create the kind of frenzied attack on these leaders as we have seen on the previous occasions directed at Kanhaiya, Umar and others.

Student leader Umar Khalid and the newly elected MLA from Gujarat Jignesh Mevani were targeted specifically. Criminal cases were registered against them claiming that it was their provocative speeches which led to violence. But again, these two leaders have not been pushed to back foot. Instead of going defensive, the Dalit leaders have blamed the RSS for the violence and have been demanding the arrest of Guruji Bhide and Ekbote. Prakash Ambedkar has even allaeged that the PMO is saving these accused. The RSS is struggling. How did it happen? Let us try to understand the new situation.

Jignesh Mevani has made it clear after the atrocity at Una that he wouldn’t let the BJP and RSS have respite even for a moment. He is also articulating an alternative vision of development and politics for the Dalits which is much more than getting representation in the electoral politics for them. Even after entering the assembly in Gujarat through elections he has made it clear that his fight would continue on the streets. (more)

Rising Pune Supergiants rode on superb batting by captain Steve Smith and Ajinkya Rahane to defeat Mumbai Indians by seven wickets in the second game of the 2017 Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on Thursday.

Chasing a target of 185, Pune crossed the line with just one ball to spare.

The hosts had started their chase on a strong note, scoring at more than 10 runs an over in the initial stages before Mayank Agarwal was dismissed by Mitchell McClenaghan.

Smith then joined Rahane in the middle and the duo added 58 runs in the space of seven overs to lay the foundation of a successful run chase.

Rahane scored 60 runs off 34 balls with six boundaries and three hits into the stands. He was finally dismissed when Nitish Rana pulled off an excellent catch at deep square leg off the bowling of Tim Southee.

Smith, however, continued in the same vein and remained unbeaten on 84 runs off a mere 54 deliveries. His innings included seven boundaries and three sixes.

Fittingly, it was he only who brought up the winning runs with two consecutive sixes off Kieron Pollard in the final over.

For Mumbai, Southee, Hardik Pandya and McClenaghan bagged a wicket each. (more)

IoT to overtake mobiles by 2018: Report

The Internet of Things (IoT) is set to overtake mobile phones as the largest category of connected device by 2018, according to the latest edition of the Ericsson Mobility Report.

Between 2015 and 2021, the number of IoT connected devices is expected to grow 23 per cent annually, of which cellular IoT is forecast to have the highest growth rate. Of the 28 billion total devices that will be connected by 2021, nearly 16 bn will be IoT devices.

Western Europe will lead the way in adding IoT connections. The number of IoT devices in this market is projected to grow 400 per cent by 2021. This will principally be driven by regulatory requirements. The report said mobile data traffic in India would grow 15 times by 2021. India expanded the most in terms of net addition during the first quarter of 2016 (calendar year), adding 21 million, followed by Myanmar (5 mn) and Indonesia (5 mn).

For example, for intelligent utility meters, and a growing demand for connected cars including the European Union’s e-call directive to be implemented in 2018. E-call is an automatic emergency call system for motor vehicles.

Rima Qureshi, senior vice-president and chief strategy officer, Ericsson, says: “IoT is now accelerating as device costs fall and innovative applications emerge. From 2020, commercial deployment of 5G networks will provide additional capabilities that are critical for IoT, such as network slicing and the capacity to connect exponentially more devices than is possible today.”Read more.

IPL T20: Harbhajan Singh, Ambati Rayudu involved in on-field spat

Veteran spinner Harbhajan Singh sparked a controversy by engaging into a heated argument with his MumbaiIndians' teammate Ambati Rayudu during their Indian Premier League (IPL) match where they had an eight-wicket win against Rising Pune Supergiants at Mumbai Cricket Association Stadium last evening .

The incident took place in the 11th over when Rayudu failed to stop a boundary hit by Pune Supergiants' Saurabh Tiwary on Harbhajan's delivery despite a brilliant effort at the boundary rope.

Furious with Rayudu's fielding, Harbhajan started abusing his teammate which sparked the argument between the two players.

Rayudu, who seemed to be disappointed with Harbhajan's behaviour, walked towards his senior player to oppose him. But, the off spinner was seen pacifying him before the situation would have turned out of control.

It was not the first time when Harbhajan was seen engaging in an on-field spat. He had earlier slapped tainted pacer S. Sreesanth after Mumbai Indians' defeat to Kings XI Punjab in the first edition of the IPL. Read more.

Bombay HC allows BCCI to hold May 1 IPL match in Pune

The Bombay High Court today permitted BCCI to hold the May 1 IPL match between Mumbai Indians and RisingPune Supergiants in Pune, days after it ordered all matches post April 30 to be shifted to other venues instead of  holding them in drought-hit Maharashtra.

A division bench of justices V M Kanade and M S Karnik granted the permission while hearing an application filed by BCCI's general manager (games development) Ratnakar Shetty urging the court to let the cricket body hold the May 1 IPL match as scheduled in Pune.

The application had been filed following an order passed by the high court on April 12 directing for all IPL matches from April 30 onwards to be shifted out of Maharashtra due to the severe drought situation in the state.

By the High Court order, a total of 13 matches were to be shifted to other states.

Shetty, in his application, sought the court to grant permission to allow the cricket board to hold the May 1 match in Pune between Mumbai Indians and Rising Pune Supergiants as they would not be able to make arrangements to shift the match in a single day.Read More.

Shift all IPL matches out of Maharashtra after Apr 30, Bombay HC tells BCCI

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday ordered that all Indian Premier League (IPL) matches scheduled in Maharashtra after April 30 be shifted elsewhere in view of the severe drought in the state.

This gives the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) 18 days to look for new venues for 13 matches in May, including the final in Mumbai on May 29.

The order came despite an assurance by the BCCI that IPL franchises of Mumbai and Pune had agreed to contribute Rs 5 crore to the chief minister’s drought relief fund.

The court said: “We agree that merely shifting of IPL matches out of the state will not be a solution but this can be a beginning to address the drought situation in Maharashtra. Several people are dying because of water scarcity in the state. This court cannot ignore the plight of such people.”

Sources close to both the Mumbai Indians and Rising Pune Supergiants said the team promoters were now waiting to sit with the BCCI to chart the way forward.

“In 2014, when the IPL matches moved to Dubai for the first leg of the season, the BCCI had, after consulting the teams, agreed to partly compensate the added expenses on the teams for travelling and staying abroad. Both teams expect a similar resolution,” said an executive.

The loss of revenue for the teams will become clearer when new venues are decided. As a rule, if a team is unable to play at its home stadium for any reason, the ground that the match shifts to becomes the team’s home ground for that period.

For example, if Mumbai Indians’ matches are held at Eden Gardens, the Kolkata ground will be treated as Mumbai Indians’ home ground and the proceeds from the gate revenues will go to the Mumbai team, as they would have at the Wankhede Stadium.

“One of the main things that the teams would want to discuss with the BCCI is the new venues. There has to be some following of the Mumbai and Pune teams at the new venues,” said another executive close to the development.

The court order came on a public interest litigation filed by non-government organisation Loksatta Movement, which challenged the use of more than six million litres of water for ground-management, despite Maharashtra facing drought. It had wanted all the matches shifted out of the state.

The court also noted that several districts in Maharashtra were not even getting water for sanitation and other purposes, and the non-potable water being used by the stadiums to maintain pitches can be of use in such districts. “In such cases, one would have expected the BCCI and other respondents (Maharashtra Cricket Association and Bombay Cricket Association) to come forward on their own and shift the matches out of Maharashtra. However, unfortunately, nothing has been done. This court has now no other option than to direct the BCCI to transfer matches out of Maharashtra.”

All matches to be held from April 30 onwards in Maharashtra will have to be shifted to another state. We are giving the authorities 15 days to make all necessary arrangements.”

After April 30, 13 matches were scheduled to be held in Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur.

Tata Tiago trains guns on the Celerio, i10 at Rs 3.39 lakh

India's biggest vehicle manufacturer Tata Motors today launched the compact hatchback Tiago at Rs 3.39 lakh petrol (ex-showroom, Mumbai), while the diesel is priced at Rs 4.18 lakh.

The Tiago (formerly named Zica) will compete against Hyundai i10, Maruti Celerio, Maruti Wagon R to name a few in the B Segment space.

The Tiago, promoted by ace footballer Lionel Messi, is built on an all-new platform and will fill the product gap between the Nano and the Bolt as the ageing Indica is now increasingly pushed for commercial usage. 

The Tiago will feature two new engines, petrol (1.2 litre) and diesel (1.05 litre). The 1.2 litre, three cylinder petrol is a new ground up naturally aspirated engine generating peak power of 85ps. This is the first new engine from the gasoline family of Tata Motors. The petrol version has a claimed mileage of 23.84 kmpl

The diesel version, meanwhile, carries the smallest engine yet developed by Tata Motors for passenger application, a 1 litre three cylinder, turbo-charged mill that develops peak power 70ps. The diesel version of the Tiago has a claimed mileage of 27.28 kmpl.

Features like bottle holders on all doors, iPad or tablet holding tray inside the glove compartment, hands-free telephony above the drivers’ head, new fabric for upholstery are not seen on other models.

The Harman-developed but Tata Motors-funded entertainment system is the Tiago’s biggest draw. With eight speakers (a first in the segment) the compact hatchback is made to appeal to the music loving youth. The car will have five variants each of both fuels.

The car will have a multi-drive mode — City and Eco — a feature also seen on the Zest sedan though it has one more drive option Sport. The two drive modes are supported by an advanced Engine Management System.

Tata Motors team spent three years in developing the car and was originally slotted for a commercial launch in January, just before the Auto Expo. Though the car was showcased at the Expo it was not commercially launched.

The Tiago is the first car to flaunt the new Impact design philosophy. The car is developed with inputs from Pune, UK and Italy design studios.

Eager to cash in on demand for automatic transmission Tata Motors will be offering AMT technology on the Tiago as well in later months.

The Tiago will be the third all-new product launch by Tata Motors in 20 months, Zest and Bolt being the two products. Last financial year the company launched the updated Nano called GenX Nano with a host of new features, new styling and an added automated manual transmission (AMT) variant.
