As sex accusations flood social media, lawyers gear up for suits

As the torrent of accusations continues, it is unlikely to be the last

Social media has overflowed with sexual misconduct allegations during the last few weeks. The 450-word post that Melanie Kohler put on Facebook probably had the shortest life — a few hours. It may also have been the first to get its author sued.
As the torrent of social media sex accusations continues, it is unlikely to be the last.
“The lid is off,” said Mark G Clark, a Michigan lawyer specialising in online defamation cases. “Power to the people. Anyone can have their grievance heard. But at the same time, anyone can be irresponsible and malicious.”
He noted that Facebook and Twitter see themselves as neutral platforms that cannot take a side in disputes. So the aggrieved call lawyers. “We get inquiries daily: ‘I’ve been defamed online. What can you do to help?’” Clark said.
Kohler, who runs a scuba diving company in Hawaii with her husband, had both narrow and far-reaching goals when she wrote her Facebook post on October 18.
She wanted to unburden herself of something horrible that she said had happened to her, something that she had never told a single soul before that morning. Describing a drunken night about a decade ago, she wrote about Brett Ratner, a Hollywood producer and director.
“Brett Ratner raped me,” Kohler wrote on Facebook. “I’m saying his name, I’m saying it publicly.”
She was inspired by the national uproar over sexual harassment, but did not really think about joining that larger conversation. The post was intended for her family and friends, and they responded immediately. “I was feeling really loved and supported,” Kohler said in an interview. But such is the nature of Facebook that others quickly read it as well, including an associate of Ratner’s. His attorney, Martin Singer, called before lunch. “I was totally caught off guard,” Kohler said. (more)

Apple releases iOS 11.0.2 update to fix crackling noise issue of iPhone 8

The update also addresses two other issues

Within a couple of weeks after the rollout of iOS 11, Apple has released its second update to address bugs which include a crackling noise coming from the earpiece of some iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus smartphones.
The latest update -- "iOS 11.0.2" was released over-the-air, that can be downloaded to all eligible devices from the Settings app, MacRumors reported late on Tuesday.
The bug was discovered following the release of iOS 11 after some users complained about a "very annoying" crackling or static noise coming from the earpiece during phone calls and FaceTime calls.
The update also addresses two other issues -- one that could cause some photos on the device to become hidden and the other was an email bug, the report added.

Will iPhone X hurt iPhone 8 and 8 Plus sale? Here's what experts say

Apple unveiled both iPhone X and iPhone 8 models, with the "super-premium" iPhone X starting at $999

As Apple gets ready to ship iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus before it opens iPhone X for pre-orders, a top analyst with Taiwanese business group KGI Securities has warned that iPhone X will cannibalise iPhone 8 orders.
According to Ming-Chi Kuo, the most famous analyst with KGI Securities when it comes to Apple, it is very likely that iPhone X demand will cannibalise iPhone 8 pre-orders.
"While it takes three to six weeks or more to ship new iPhone models after they are available for preorder, they see the iPhone 8 taking less than one to two weeks. This is due to the iPhone X cannibalisation," StreetInsider.com quoted the analyst as saying late on Monday.
Apple unveiled both iPhone X and iPhone 8 models, with the "super-premium" iPhone X starting at $999.
Ming, however, said the new Apple Watch Series 3's (GPS + Cellular version) could be a runaway hit.
"We estimate the preorder weighting of the GPS + Cellular version is 80-90 per cent. While not available in all countries, most users have pre-ordered the GPS + Cellular version because it offers phone and internet access functions without an iPhone and given the low premium of $70 over the GPS version," the analyst predicted.
According to the Verge, while Apple Watch shipments are well below iPhone shipments, investors should start keeping tabs on this new product, with shipments expected to surge much higher than previous generation models.
Apple would launch iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, starting Rs 64,000, in India on September 29 while pre-bookings will start on September 22.
The iPhone X will come to India on November 3, starting Rs 89,000. (more)

Apple is bringing Siri to Mac & third-party apps, says WSJ

Tech giant Apple is likely to bring Siri, its computer programme that works as an intelligent personal assistant and knowledge navigator, to the Mac.
The company will also give developers access to Siri so that they can incorporate it into their apps.
The announcement is likely to be made during the week-long Worldwide Developers Conference, which kicks off Monday, the Verge quoted the Wall Street Journal as saying.
Apple introduced Siri as an iPhone feature in 2011, creating a way to find information or complete tasks by speaking to the phone instead of typing or tapping.
Siri uses a natural language user interface to answer questions, make recommendations and perform actions by delegating requests to a set of Web services. The software, both in its original version and as an iOS feature, adapts to the user's individual language usage and individual searches with continuing use and returns results that are individualised. Read more.
