Airport Authority of India (AAI) has invited job applications for 186 Junior Assistant (Fire Service) & Senior Assistant (Electronics) posts in the southern region. The date for the online registration is June 16 and the deadline for the online registration process is July 15 till 11.59pm. The candidates can apply through AAI Recruitment 2018 Notifications or from the official website www.aai.aero.

Candidates who are domicile of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, Pondicherry and Lakshadweep can apply for the above-mentioned posts at various airports in these states.

Eligibility criteria:

• The candidates’ Age shall be 18 to 30 years as on 31.03.2017. And the maximum age limit for Widows, divorced women and women judicially separated from their husbands and who are not remarried. Upto the age of 35 years (upto 40 years for member of SC/ST and 38 years for OBC).
• For the Junior Assistant, the Candidates should be 10th pass with 3 years' approved regular Diploma in Mechanical/Automobile/ Fire with minimum 50% marks. Or 12th pass with 50 per cent marks.
• For the Senior Assistant, the candidate must have a Diploma in Electronics / Tele Communication / Radio Engineering (03 years Course) from a recognized institution and two years of work experience in the concerned discipline.

SELECTION PROCESS:

Junior Assistant (Fire service):

• The candidates will have to appear for a two hour written exam which will be a computer-based test. Minimum pass marks will be 50 out of 100 for UR /OBC candidates and 40 out of 100 for SC/ST candidates.
• On passing the online written exam, the shortlisted candidates shall be subjected certificates/ document verification followed by medical examination.
• Further, those cleared in the medical examination will be allowed for driving test.

Tamil Nadu protests: Sterlite plant non-operational after 9 dead in clashes

Protesters have alleged that the plant was polluting groundwater in their area; CM Palaniswami announced a compensation of Rs 1 million (Rs 10 lakh)

At least nine people were killed and another 20 injured on Tuesday on the 100th day of protest against the expansion of Vedanta's Sterlite Copper unit in Tamil Nadu's Tuticorin, also known as Thoothukudi.

Later in the day, Sterlite Copper said it is unfortunate of what happened on Tuesday and called itself to be non-operational, ANI reported.

Protesters have alleged that the plant was polluting groundwater in their area. Sterlite Copper represents the copper unit of Vedanta Limited which operates a 400,000 tonnes per annum-plant in Tuticorin.

Chief Minister Palaniswami said in a statement in Chennai that the protesters took out a procession towards the collectorate in defiance of the prohibitory orders clamped in the specific area in Tuticorin.

Hurling stones and setting government vehicles an78d public property on fire, the agitators went on the rampage in the town, about 600 km from Tamil Nadu capital Chennai.

Police said nearly 5000 protesters gathered near a local church and insisted on taking out a rally to the district collectorate after they were denied permission to march to the copper smelter plant.

Police personnel prepare to tackle a crowd as agitators demanding closure of Vedanta's Sterlite Copper unit entered the 100th day, in Tuticorin, on Tuesday. The agitation turned violent with police opening fire.

Initial pushing and shoving soon led to violent clashes after agitated locals began hurling stones at police and overturned a vehicle. Security personnel used batons and burst teargas shells to break up the protest.

Many were injured in stone-pelting by the agitators, who also set some vehicles on fire. Windscreens of some government cars were smashed and bank premises were attacked by the rampaging mobs.

Police said section 144 of CrPc has been invoked in and around the Sterlite unit to provide security, according to the orders of the Madras High Court.

Meanwhile, a peaceful demonstration was held near the old bus stand in the town, also demanding the closure of the Sterlite unit and the proposed expansion of the plant.

Several shops in this town, Srivaikundam and Oddapidaram remained shut in support of the protest, police said.

The district has been witnessing several protests by locals and others against the Sterlite Copper plant in Tamil Nadu and its proposed expansion.

Rajinikanth's spiritual plank not for 'Dravidian cradle' Tamil Nadu: Stalin Edit

DMK working president M K Stalin has said Tamil Nadu was the cradle of the Dravidian movement, where there was no place for spiritual politics as enunciated by superstar Rajinikanth.

He made the remark just after the top star called on his father and DMK chief M Karunanidhi at his residence here, days after announcing his entry into politics.

Citing Rajinikanth's assertion of "spiritual politics", Stalin told reporters here yesterday that Tamil Nadu was the cradle of the Dravidian movement.

"Some are creating an impression that Rajinikanth is to launch a party at the instigation of people who intend to decimate the Dravidian movement in Tamil Nadu.

"Let me tell you this is the land of Periyar Anna (Dravidar Kazhagam founder E V Ramasamy Periyar) and Kalaignar (Karunanidhi)... such efforts in the past have ended in a fiasco," he said.

Asked if Rajinikanth sought the DMK's support, he said such things could be decided only during elections.

Announcing his political debut on December 31 last year, Rajinikanth batted for honesty in politics and good governance.

He said "everything needs to be changed" and declared that "spiritual politics" needs to be ushered in with transparency, sans shades of any caste or religion.

Stalin said the actor calling on Karunanidhi was nothing new and that he had called on the nonagenarian leader some months ago to enquire about his health.

Actor Vijayakanth too had called on Karunanidhi and sought his blessings before launching his party, the DMK leader said. (more)

TNPSC Invites Applications For Various Govt. Posts. Steps to Apply

Last date for submission of application is 13th December, 2017 (Wednesday).

Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) is inviting applications for recruitment of various posts through Combined Civil Services Examination. The posts are Village Administrative Officer, Junior Assistants, Bill Collector, Field Surveyor, Draftsman, Typist, and Steno-Typist (III). It is mandatory for the interested and eligible candidates to register their basic particulars through One Time online Registration system on payment of Rs.150/- (Rupees One Hundred and Fifty only) towards registration fee and then should apply online for this recruitment. Keep in mind that the One-Time Registration will be valid for 5 years from the date of registration. Thereafter, the registration should be renewed by paying the prescribed fee. Last date for submission of application is 13th December, 2017 (Wednesday).

Exam Paper Pattern: Duration of Combined Civil Services Exam would be of 3 hrs. with General Studies (75 Marks), Aptitude Test (25 Marks) and General Tamil/English (100 Marks Each) as subjects. Maximum marks are 300 and minimum marks qualifying for qualifying are 90.

Job insecurity gives way to India's 1st IT workers union in Tamil Nadu

Previous attempts to organise 2.8 million employees of the country's IT sector have failed

In 2008, as Tamil Nadu erupted in angry protests against the killings of Sri Lankan Tamils during that country’s civil war, a group of young software professionals in Chennai’s Tidel Park banded together to form a human chain. “Stop the War, Save Tamils” was their demand – a slogan that featured on posters, T-shirts and Orkut posts.

Nine years later, their agitation has led to the formation of India’s first independent union for information technology employees. Amid reports of large-scale layoffs by several Indian software firms companies, the Forum for Information TechnologyEmployees, which evolved from the campaign to protect Tamils in Sri Lanka, is in the process of getting itself registered formally as a union for technology employees in India. It will be the first independent association of its kind in the country.

Previous attempts to organise the estimated 2.8 million employees of the country’s information technology sector have failed to make much headway. “Normally, the middle class has an aversion to political activity,” said J Jayaprakash, a member of the forum.

But in recent months, insecurity has been running high among India’s information technology employees. Approximately 4.5% of employees are expected to lose their jobs over the next few months, reported Mint, attribution the turbulence to the companies’ “under-preparedness in adapting to newer technologies and dealing with the fallout from US President Donald Trump’s protectionist policies”. It added that at least 56,0000 employees of top software companies such as Infosys, Wipro and Cognizant are expected to lose their jobs over the next year.

This uncertainty has made employees realise the need for collective action. Said Jayaprakash: “Since we ourselves are IT employees who have started this, people trust us to take up their issues. It is a homegrown solution to their problems.” Read more

Mistry was removed as director of Tata Industries on Monday, this week

Cyrus Mistry was today removed as director of Tata Industries following shareholders' vote, the first such instance of the embattled executive being ousted from the board since his removal as Tata Group chairman.

Mistry also ceases to be the chairman of the company following his removal as director, Tata Industries said.

"Tata Industries, at its extraordinary general meeting on December 12, 2016, removed Cyrus P Mistry, as a director of the company. Hence, he also has ceased to be the chairman of the company," it said.

Mistry was abruptly ousted as chairman of Tata Sons -- the holding company of the USD 103 billion salt-to-software conglomerate -- on October 24. Since then, interim Chairman Ratan Tata has moved to consolidate his position by seeking to remove Mistry from boards of key listed firms.

Even with the latest development, the Tata vs Mistry battle has been raging unabated, with both sides taking shots at each other over the past week.

Mistry refutes Tata's allegations

Refuting allegations that he misled the selection committee set up in 2011 to find new Tata Sons Chairman, Mistry on Sunday hit out at Tata Sons Interim Chairman Ratan Tata saying his predecessor's "conduct has eroded the Tata brand and values materially".

On a series of allegations leveled against him by Tata Sons in a letter to stakeholders of Tata firms, Mistry said, "Repeat a lie a thousand times and hope it becomes a truth, seems to be Ratan Tata's last-ditch effort to overcome a monumental disaster his actions have unleashed." Tatas accuse Mistry of misleading selection committee to get selected as chairman

Mistry's rebuttal came after Tata Sons said that Mistry had misled the selection committee set up in 2011 for selecting a chairman to succeed Ratan Tata.

"Mistry made lofty statements about plans for Tata Group, but didn't give into effect management structures and plans he promised," stated Tata Sons. How did Jayalalithaa enter politics from film industry?

1964- Jayalalithaa makes her film debut in a lead role in 'Chinnada Gombe' a Kannada film. To support her debt-ridden family, Jayalalithaa gives us on her dreams of becoming a lawyer and plunges into the film industry.

1965- Jayalalithaa's Tamil film debut comes in the landmark blockbuster hit, 'Venniraadai'. In the same year, she stars in a film, 'Aayirathil Oruvan', with Tamil cinema's biggest star MG Ramachandran (MGR) for the first time, to begin what remains among the most successful screen pairings in Tamil cinema, as well as one of the most critical relationships in her life.

1965 - 1980 -This was the peak of Jayalalithaa's film career. She was among the highest-paid actresses in the country at the time, and endorsed top brands. In this period, she acted in over 140 films, of which about 120 were blockbuster hits.

1970 - Jayalalithaa has a falling out with MGR, after he chooses to work with another leading lady.

1971 - Jayalalithaa's mother Sandhya dies.

1973 - She stars in a movie with MGR for the last time, in 'Pattikaattu Ponnaiya', a year after he split from the DMK to launch the AIADMK.

1977 - Jayalalithaa steps back from films.

1981 - Jayalalithaa revives relationship with MGR.

1982 - Jayalalithaa joins MGR's AIADMK and soon after delivers her maiden political speech at the party conference.

1983- She is appointed the AIADMK's propaganda secretary.

1984 - She is elected to the Rajya Sabha, as MGR wants her there for her fluency in English and knowledge of several languages. She remains a member of the Rajya Sabha till 1989. She becomes a key campaigner for the AIADMK as the party wins a massive election victory despite MGR remaining hospitalized through the campaigning. Her rising prominence irks senior hands in the party. Her attempt to be named interim CM also does not go well with MGR.

1986 - MGR sacks Jayalalithaa from all party posts after she forms a parallel political outfit. However, she continues as Rajya Sabha member of the AIAMDK.

1987 - MGR dies, leaving no clear political heir. AIADMK descends into chaos over his legacy. Jayalalithaa competes with his widow Janaki for control of the party. The party splits into two major factions, one behind each woman.

1989 - The Assembly election saw the Jayalalithaa faction win 27 seats to the Janaki faction's two. Janaki steps aside to clear the way for Jayalalithaa's accession to MGR's legacy. Jayalalithaa becomes Tamil Nadu's first woman Leader of Opposition. During the budget session, she s assaulted in the Assembly Hall and a senior DMK leader attempts to disrobe her. She vows she will not return except as Chief Minister.

Tamil Nadu: Blow for Karunanidhi family's business interests?

Thursday’s state election results are likely to make the fortunes for some businesses and mar for some others. The biggest and most prominent loser of the day was from the family of DMK chief M Karunanidhi. On the day of the results, the Sun TV stock lost Rs 2,229 crore in market value. Its market capitalisation fell from Rs 16,845 crore at its close on Thursday to Rs 14,616 crore at the end of the day. By virtue of his 75 per cent holding, DMK chief M Karunanidhi’s grandnephew Kalanithi Maran would take three-fourths of that hit.

This notional loss could be an indicator of the bad news in store for the family’s business interests that extend beyond media. While Maran was among the first in the family to get into organised business through his venture into broadcast media in the early 1990s, there were others who have followed in his footsteps. After a brief break-up in relations with the Marans, Karunanidhi’s immediate family members floated Kalaignar TV in 2007. At the time Karunanidhi’s wife Dayalu Ammal owned 60 per cent, while his daughter Kanimozhi owned 20 per cent. Karunanidhi’s grandsons, from his sons Stalin and Azhagiri have also built interests in a range of businesses from real estate to movies to granite mining.

The management of Sun TV has often maintained that its business is independent of the government in power, but the market seems to be understanding it differently. A second term of the AIADMK could prove to be tougher for the family as it does not have the cushion of a friendly regime at the Centre. Read more.

Missing Infosys employee died in Brussels attack

An Infosys employee from Bengaluru, missing since the deadly bombings in Brussels, was among those killed in the terror attack last week.

“The Belgian authorities have identified Raghavendran Ganeshan as one of the victims of the Brussels Terror Attack of March 22,” External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Vikas Swarup said. Ganeshan was a victim of the blast that took place in the Metro at Maelbeek station in Brussels.

“The body is on its way to India via Amsterdam. Sincere condolences to the family,” Indian Ambassador to Belgium Manjeev Singh Puri was quoted as saying on Monday.

Infosys condoled the death of Ganeshan and said it will provide all possible support to the family. “…Our thoughts and prayers are with Raghavendran’s family and with those who were injured or lost a loved one in these attacks… We will continue to provide all possible support to his family in this hour of grief,” a company spokesperson said.

Raghvedran, 31, is survived by his wife and a one-month-old baby. He was working at Brussels for last four years on a project with telecom major Proximus. The family, originally from Tamil Nadu, moved to Mumbai several years ago. After he completed his junior college from Mumbai, Raghvendran went to Chennai to study engineering from where he was picked by Infosys during campus placements. He was passing through the Maelbeek station in the Metro like every day to reach his office when the terror attack took place.

This is not the first time an Indian IT firm has lost its employee in a terror attack. In September 2001, six engineers of Wipro, who were working at the World Trade Centre in New York, died when the Twin Towers collapsed after the worst-ever terror attack on American soil.

In December 2014, an Infosys employee was taken hostage among many others by armed terrorists in Sydney. However, he and the other Indian hostage managed to escape unhurt during the rescue operation.

“It is extremely sad when you lose somebody so dear. Employees of our organisations are literally a part of our extended family,” said B V R Mohan Reddy, chairman of Nasscom. “We as an industry have taken a number of precautionary measures but there are instances (like terror attacks) which we can’t avoid,” he added.
