Heavily drunk, Gujarat Dy CM's son Nitin Patel misbehaves; taken off flight

Jaimin Patel cleared the immigration and other checks in a wheelchair: Qatar Airways officials

Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel's son was early on Monday prevented by authorities from boarding a Qatar Airways flight to Greece after he arrived in a "heavily drunken" state at the airport and argued with the airline's staff.
Official sources told IANS that Jaimin Patel, who is in his mid-30s, his wife Jhalak and their daughter Vaishvi were stopped from boarding the Qatar Airways flight, which was to take off at 4 a.m.
When Patel, who is a land dealer, reached Ahmedabad International Airport, he was not even able to walk because of his drunken state.
He cleared the immigration and other checks in a wheelchair due to his inebriated condition, said airport officials.
"Jaimin Patel was prevented from boarding the flight. He also had an argument with the staff of the airways," an official said, requesting anonymity.
Meanwhile, Nitin Patel told reporters in the evening in Gandhinagar that this was a ploy to defame him. "My son, his wife and daughter were going for a vacation. He was not feeling well." Read more

PokemonGo to Rio2016: The top five social media trends in 2016

A selection of events that played out big on social media in the year 2016

The year 2016 is nearly over and, like previous years, this one also saw some good, some bad and some strange stuff on social media.

It is not unusual for people to comment on the speed with which an entire year went by, that does not, however, mean that the year was not full of action. Here is a recap of some of the major topics that trended on social media this year to help refresh your memory:

#Demonetisation

If you thought #Brexit was a prank that went too far, wait till you hear about this one! It was November 8, 2016, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on national television that the currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 would cease to be legal tender from midnight and the people of India would have 50 days in which to exchange or deposit these notes in banks. A stunned India has since been standing in queues at banks and ATMs, as the two demonetised currency denominations accounted for 86 per cent of the total cash in circulation in the county of 1.3 billion people. There is hardly any Indian who has not been affected by this decision and the topic has caught the fancy of social media users in one way or the other. As far as shelf lives of an event goes, #demonetisation or #noteban is right up there with #GeneralElections

Cartoonists also had a great time during these fifty days. Here are two samples

#Brexit

To stay or leave? In June this year, British citizens voted to answer this question about Britain’s membership of the European Union. In an event that sent shockwaves around the world, 52 per cent of the voters who participated in the referendum, voted to leave the EU. British Prime Minister David Cameron, who was in favour of a “stay”, resigned after the result was known. He was succeeded by Theresa May at the Prime Minister’s office. The aftershocks of this event are still being felt by the global economy. The entire process, it is believed, will take two years to finish.

While the world was in shock when the result was declared, social media reacted like, well, social media!

#PokemonGo

In July this year, Niantic released an augmented reality game for mobile phones and people all over the world left their homes in search of imaginary creatures called Pokémon. Gamers tried to locate and capture these creatures using their phone’s GPS. The game, a wild success the world over, saw more than 500 million downloads. It now holds five Guinness World Records, including one for grossing the highest revenue ($ 206.5 million) in the first month.

So, did you catch some Pikachu or not?

#Rio2016

The year 2016 happened to be one of the 31st Olympic games in the city of Rio de Janiero, Brazil. Just like Pokemon Go, #Rio2016 was a global phenomenon that became one of the biggest trends this year. Some 11,000 athletes representing 205 countries participated in the games and for those 17 days in August when the games were on, social media forgot the world’s worries and watched these super athletes compete for glory. USA topped the tables with 46 gold medals. India had to wait for many days before it could win a medal. Sakshi Malik won a bronze in Women’s Freestyle Wrestling and two days later P V Sindhu bagged a silver medal in Women’s singles Badminton.

Didn't become PM to cut ribbons and light lamps: Narendra Modi

Raises OROP at Uttarakhand rally, says issue was pending for 40 years, previous govts misled forces

Addressing a public rally in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi came down heavily on his critics, saying that he hadn't come to power merely to cut ribbons and light lamps.

The remarks came even as Modi inaugurated the the Chardham highway, which is expected to improve connectivity between the four pilgrimage centres of Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. The assembly polls in the state are scheduled to be held shortly.
In a fiery speech, the Prime Minister said that the people of Uttarakhand were no longer willing to wait for development, and that the inauguration of the Chardham is a tribute to those who lost their lives in the flash floods that hit the state in 2013.
Asserting that Uttarakhand's economy was centred around tourism, Modi said that if proper infrastructure was provided, the sector would bustle, and people from all over would flock to the state. He claimed that the Chardham project offered employment opportunities for state's citizens.
Reminding the people that the country had given the absolute majority to a single party for the first time in years, Modi nudged to them to decide whether they got him to power just to inaugurate small projects, or to deliver the goods. He reiterated his claim that he had been appointed a chowkidaar (sentry) of the people and that 'some people' -- indicating the Opposition -- had a huge problem with this.(more)

Read more

'Demonetisation may have cost banks Rs 3,000 cr per day'

On Wednesday, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) withdrew its previous directive that required deposits above Rs 5,000 in old currency notes be justified to two bank officers. To understand the impact of this move, Business Standard spoke to the HARVINDER SINGH, general secretary of the All India Bank Officers Confederation.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has withdrawn its previous directive that required deposits above Rs 5,000 in old currency notes to be explained to bank officers. What do you make of this?
Breaking News : We have been pleading before RBI and Ministry of Finance that instructions issued for general public must be always clear. What was happening was that instructions issued through electronic media or notifications were reaching banks much later than when the people at large were coming to know. There was time gap between the implementation of the instructions issued by the RBI/government because when the instructions reach banks, they would have to modify their systems so that the instructions are implemented.
For example, one instruction came that we will permit withdrawal of 2.5 lakhs per family where there are marriages. Lot of conditionality were put. But these instructions were made viral during the mid of the day but actually these instructions were received by banks two days after. For these 2-3 days bank officers were facing a lot of problem.
Right from the day this policy of demonetization was declared we have been pleading with the RBI and government that you consult with us. We will give you the ground level problems. We will give you suggestions for smoother implementation. But no opportunity was ever granted to us.Read more.

Now, banks asking for source of funds deposited in old currency

A day after the Union government announced that bank customers would now need to provide satisfactory explanation while depositing more than Rs 5,000 in old currency notes, every bank has come out with its own way to evaluate its customers.

At one of the Central Bank branches in the national capital, the bank manager appeared reluctant to accept old currency in the denomination of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000. “This new scheme is to fix the bank officials. They will ask me why I took money in old currency,” said the visibly upset manager, who did not wish to be identified.

The manager was asking each customers to write an application detailing why she didn’t deposit the money before December 20. The bank has also designed a form asking the customers to fill details like name, account number, and since when she had held an account at the branch.

The customers were also being asked about the details of their last deposit. Some customers were asked to attach copies of their PAN, along with their application letters.

The customers in their applications mentioned various reasons for not depositing the money earlier. However, long bank queues and December 30 being the initial deadline for depositing cash were the most cited reasons on the application forms.
At another public sector bank, the branch manager was yet to begin the process of accepting old currency notes above Rs 5,000 in total value. “I am yet to get directions from my seniors,” the manager said on the condition of not being identified. But the manager was clear that no old currency would be accepted if the customer didn’t have any concrete reasons.

“I will ask for evidence of hospitalisation or travel because I don’t want to face any inquiry in the future,” the manager said.

Private banks, a few of which are under scrutiny over money laundering to businessmen, are more sceptical. The second-largest private bank has come out with a form asking customers to detail the source of funds, besides other details.

Will supporters of demonetisation please click yes, PM Modi asks nation

Through 'Jan Jan Ki Baat,' Modi asked 10 questions to gauge the mood of nation post demonetisation

After ‘Mann Ki Baat’, the Narendra Modi government is experimenting with ‘Jan Jan Ki Baat’ to get people’s feedback on burning issues. Within an hour of the Prime Minister asking citizens of the country to rate his latest initiative—demonetisation—on his narendramodi app, there were 3,700 retweets and 7,900 likes on his Twitter handle. Soon, Jan Jan Ki Baat was trending on social media with ‘’cashless India’’ stopping to give its feedback on the banning of big notes.
It is not known yet how many have taken time out to assess the latest initiative of the government, but the questions asked are pointed. With several state elections lined up through 2017, the PM wants to be sure how people have responded to demonetization as a step to eliminate black money.
It’s a 10-step survey, beginning with a simple question—do you think there’s black money in India. Then it goes on to ask whether you think it needs to be eliminated and what you think of the government efforts in eliminatingblack money etc. From the fifth question onwards, the survey gets into demonetisation full steam. Question number 5: How do you assess the government move to ban Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes? One has to move the fingers along the wheel to rate, while green and red lights flash on the screen to suggest what your assessment is.Read more
