Will supporters of demonetisation please click yes, PM Modi asks nation

Through 'Jan Jan Ki Baat,' Modi asked 10 questions to gauge the mood of nation post demonetisation

After ‘Mann Ki Baat’, the Narendra Modi government is experimenting with ‘Jan Jan Ki Baat’ to get people’s feedback on burning issues. Within an hour of the Prime Minister asking citizens of the country to rate his latest initiative—demonetisation—on his narendramodi app, there were 3,700 retweets and 7,900 likes on his Twitter handle. Soon, Jan Jan Ki Baat was trending on social media with ‘’cashless India’’ stopping to give its feedback on the banning of big notes.
It is not known yet how many have taken time out to assess the latest initiative of the government, but the questions asked are pointed. With several state elections lined up through 2017, the PM wants to be sure how people have responded to demonetization as a step to eliminate black money.
It’s a 10-step survey, beginning with a simple question—do you think there’s black money in India. Then it goes on to ask whether you think it needs to be eliminated and what you think of the government efforts in eliminatingblack money etc. From the fifth question onwards, the survey gets into demonetisation full steam. Question number 5: How do you assess the government move to ban Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes? One has to move the fingers along the wheel to rate, while green and red lights flash on the screen to suggest what your assessment is.Read more

Lining up at the ATM? Here's how your cash actually gets there

From the printing press to the ATM, its a journey that starts with calculations at the Reserve Bank of India

Everyone likes money, especially with the Modi government's Demonetisation policy in full swing. But how does the Rs 100 note, which has reasserted its real value, and the new Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 notes reach your nearest automated teller machine (ATM)?
From the printing press to the ATM, its a journey that starts with calculations at the Reserve Bank of India and culminates in the execution of a very complicated logistics plan.
From the printing press to the ATM:
1) Finding our the country's cash needs: The RBI first calculates India's annual cash requirement. According to an Indian Express report, the calculation takes into account the quantity of notes in circulation, those which might have been destroyed, and how many would be needed for replacement. Other factors, the report added, such as projected GDP growth and inflation are also accounted for. The process starts early in the calendar year, before the new fiscal year begins, and RBIinforms the Ministry of Finance about the amount of currency that needs to be printed.
2) Telling the printing presses: India has four printing presses: One in Nashik (Maharashtra), one in Dewas (Madhya Pradesh), another in Mysuru (Karnataka( and the last in Salboni (West Bengal). These presses print out the notes after an order is placed with them and instructions are received regarding denominations and quantity of notes to be printed. The high-security paper used to print the notes comes from the currency paper mills in Mysuru and Hoshangabad.
3) Distributing the notes across the country: Once the notes have been printed, they need to be distributed across 19 regional centres of the RBI. Along with these centres, there are 4,000currency chests which serve areas not covered under these centres and they too need to receive the freshly printed notes. However, as explained by the IE report, even after these notes have reached their destinations, they do not hold any value till they are backed by cash or securities of equal value.Read more

After daughter's Rs 500-cr wedding, I-T raid at Reddy's mining company

Since hosting his daughter's lavish wedding, in which he apparently splurged Rs 500 crore, Bellary mining baron Gali Janardhana Reddy has been on the income-tax radar. The I-T department on Monday raided Reddy's Obulapuram mining company in Bellary.
Reddy had hosted the opulent wedding at the Bangalore Palace grounds on November 16.
Earlier, Reddy, then state tourism minister in the B S Yeddyurappa-led Karnataka government, had been arrested in 2011 on the charges of illegally mining iron ore and jailed for over three years. He is said to have made Rs 5,000 crore through iron ore mining in Bellary. The criminal charges against him relate to the Andhra Pradesh branch of the multi-billion dollar mining empire that he runs with family and two brothers.
The five-day wedding extravaganza that he hosted earlier this month included ceremonies held against the backdrop of lavish settings. The ostentatious wedding had stirred up a huge row over its timing, when people across the country were reeling under cash crunch after the central government's move to demonetise high value currency notes.
Palace grounds, which plays host to grand weddings, presented almost a surreal picture as Reddy's daughter Bramhani entered into a wedlock with Rajeev Reddy, the son of a leading businessman from Andhra Pradesh, with rituals conducted by a battery of priests from the famous Tirumala temple.Read more

Has the US Presidential election cast a shadow on Black Friday 2016?

As US President-elect Donald Trump gears up to take office from the 44th and current President of the United States, pundits are having a field day trying to estimate the impact that will likely have on the US citizens. Among the immediate concerns is the impact the election result will have on the holiday spending, especially Black Friday on November 25, 2016.
While some are ambivalent about it, most media reports have indicated that Black Friday might not see as spectacular spending as expected. According to a news article, this year, Veterans Day - the first peak of several peak spending days during the holiday season – failed to kick off holiday spending. It was reported that the sales were $380 million lower than expected, at $1.16 billion. Quoting Adobe Digital Insights, the report indicated that the sales registered a measly 1% growth over a year earlier, against the predicted growth of 16%.
Another report quoting data from Adobe says that between November 1 and November 14, retailers have lost over $800 million in revenue from online sales. The sharpest drop occurred after the election, with total sales growth slowing to only 1.3%, against Adobe's prediction for growth of 7.8%.
What’s Black Friday?
The day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States, Black Friday marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. Since 1932, on the fourth Thursday of November, most major retailers in the US open very early – as early as overnight hours - and offer promotional sales.
Touted as the busiest shopping day of the year since 2005, the term Black Friday was coined in 1961. It represented the point in the year when retailers begin to turn a profit, thus going from being "in the red" to being "in the black".
But Black Friday as the kickoff to the holiday spending season has not been a real trend in retail for many years now. Many retailers have now spread out their promotions over full months of November and December, rather than concentrate them on a single shopping day or weekend.

Cost of demonetisation for India Inc: Stranded trucks, unpaid workers, cancelled bills

Like millions of Indians fed up with corruption and counterfeiting, Vimal Somani cheered Prime Minister Narendra Modi's shock move to replace all high-value banknotes. Two weeks on, his business is being hammered by the ensuing cash crunch.
Sales at Somani's aluminium foil maker, Rockdude Impex, have fallen by roughly a quarter in the past week, and the cash shortage that followed the "demonetisation" drive has left his supply chain in tatters: his trucks are stranded with no money for fuel, workers won't load goods for free, and distributors can't pay up.
Modi's move on Nov. 8 was aimed at cracking down on corruption and flushing out funds stashed away in India's "black economy". But the cancellation of 500 and 1,000 rupee notes ($7.3 and $14.7), more than 80 percent of currency in circulation, threatens to push Asia's third-largest economy into a liquidity crisis.
Consumer spending makes up 56 percent of India's $2 trillion economy. But with just the small stock of smaller Denomination notes available and a struggle to get hold of new bills, consumers are holding back.
The government has acknowledged that the disruption would last weeks because of delays in note printing and technical problems with ATM machines, but Modi has made a plea for patience until Dec. 30. The government said it could not have printed new notes or recalibrated cash machines in advance for fear of the move leaking out.
Meanwhile, supply chains at small, medium and even larger companies are breaking down, underlining just how much corporate India - not just the shadow economy - relies on hard cash.
"The entire supply chain has broken," said Somani, who employs 150 people across India from his base outside Mumbai.
Problems at Rockdude go from its network of suppliers to its 1,500 distributors and 150 stockists. Its sales team, spread from Delhi to Nagaland in the east and all the way to the south, is rapidly running short of cash to promote a planned new product, even for the rickshaw rides they use to travel.
Revenues have frozen, Somani says, but fixed costs continue, including wages. These are paid online, but his staff cannot get access without being given time off to queue at the bank.
"We are cutting production," he added. "If this goes on for two more months, then it will hit us very badly."
An executive at a mid-sized hair oil manufacturer, a beauty staple in India, said sales had crumpled as consumers simply stopped buying shampoos and lotions. Wholesale markets, which operate in cash, are shut. Distributors have no cash.
"We are planning to extend some discounts to the distributors so that they at least replenish the amount of stocks they are selling, instead of not buying from us at all," he said.
"We are cutting production every day," he added.
Like many of the businessmen interviewed by Reuters, he declined to be named, given the sensitivity of the issue.
CASH CRUNCHED
In the year to March 2017, the cash crunch is estimated to pull down India's gross domestic product (GDP) growth from last year's 7.6 percent by as much as 4.1 percentage points. Brokerage Ambit Capital says it does not rule out a contraction in the October-December quarter.
Corporate operating profits are tipped to fall by as much as 40 percent in the current quarter.
People ranging from taxi drivers and street hawkers to big consumer goods firms have seen their earnings plummet by as much as 80 percent in the first week of the swap alone, according to some analysts' estimates.Read more

Rekha: A Timeless Beauty @62

Beautiful Evergreen Rekha, her Life Story:

01At 62, Rekha might no longer believe in celebrating birthdays as she has reportedly said. However, ever since this Southern beauty entered Bollywood, she has lost none of the mystique and glamour that have made her a figure of national fascination over her many years in the industry. We celebrate her birthday with a journey through her life and times.

This image was posted on Instagram by bollywood.q80

Rekha was born Bhanurekha Ganesan to Tamil actor Gemini Ganesan and Telugu actress Pushpavalli. With acting in her blood, it was only natural that she should took to the silver screen.
However, it wasn't easy. The actress has led a controversial life and it began with her birth.

Rekha's parents were not married and her father Gemini Ganesan refused to acknowledge her. On her part, Rekha kept her identity secret and revealed her origins and the story of her father's neglect much later in her career. She was famously estranged from her father after she made it big and ignored his attempts at reconciliation. Gemini Ganesan already had four daughters with his first wife, Alamelu. He had a second daughter with Pushpavalli, and another daughter and a son with second wife Savitri. Rekha has one sister, five half-sisters and a half-brother.

Credited as Baby Bhanurekha in the Telugu film Rangula Ratnam (1966), Rekha made her acting debut at age 12. Rekha made her Bollywood debut in 1969 with the movie Anjana Safar (later retitled Do Shikari). She bagged her first role as a lead actress in Sawan Bhadon (1970) opposite Navin Nischol.
The film was a big hit and Rekha became a star overnight.

Then came a blockbuster hit opposite Amitabh Bachchan in Muqaddar Ka Sikandar. In the immensely popular film, Rekha's 'smouldering intensity' as the courtesan Zohra brought her a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the Filmfare Awards.

In 1981, Yash Chopra made Silsila and executed a casting coup with Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan playing a married couple and Rekha playing the 'other woman.'

Silsila was widely considered a case of art imitating life as Rekha's alleged personal alliance with the married Amitabh had gathered notoriety amongst filmgoers.

The two actors gave a string of hit films together spurning reams of gossip about their 'relationship'. Silsila, however, turned out to be their last collaboration.

But if her life off-screen was languishing, Rekha's career was blazing away, firing on all engines. She was mesmerising in 1981 film Umrao Jaan and her portrayal of the titular courtesan poetess won her the National Film Award for Best Actress.

The latter half of the '80s saw her venture into art house cinema with independent directors.
Shyam Benegal's award-winning drama, Kalyug (1981), Govind Nihalani's Vijeta (1982), Girish Karnad's Utsav (1984) and Gulzar's Ijaazat (1987) were some of Rekha's memorable films from this era.

Rekha's career graph showed a dip at the dawn of the '90s and she started losing lead roles to younger actresses. Once again, she put her talent for reinvention to good use with roles in Mira Nair's risqué Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love (1996) and the commercially successful Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi (1996) opposite Akshay Kumar. In the latter, she played the role of a gangster (which won her another award) and earned her the nickname 'Madam X'.

Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi was a major grosser and earned Rekha several awards, including the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award and the Star Screen Award for Best Villain.

Many consider her unlucky in love, however. In 1990, Rekha married Delhi-based businessman Mukesh Aggarwal, a relationship that ended in tragedy when Mr Aggarwal committed suicide a year later.

While she has always remained secretive about her personal life, this year many shocking revelations were made about the life of the actress in a biography by Yasser Usman.

Titled Rekha: The Untold Story, the biography is a tell-all supposedly bringing many rumours around the actress' enigma to the forefront, and addressing the relationships in her life.

Decoding the big ATM problem: India just doesn't have enough engineers for the job

Decoding the big ATM problem: India just doesn't have enough engineers for the job

Ten days on, the banking sector is yet to recover from the government's Demonetisationmove. There are two main reasons for this. One, there is just not enough new notes being supplied by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), even after running its printing presses over time. And the second, there are not enough technicians to recaliberate automated teller machines in the countries.
Only once the ATMs are recalibrated and enough Rs 500 notes are printed, the chaos will be under control, say bankers.
Even as top bankers are assuring public that the situation will normalise in a week, bankers behind the counters think otherwsie.
The new 500 notes have not been released in rural areas. Most of the branches just 20-30 kilometers from metros have not seen the new 500 rupee note as the currency chests are currently available only in cities. Even in metros, the stockpile of the new notes is thin.
A public sector bank branch manager in the outskirt of Kolkata told Business Standard that the currency chests are now dispensing soiled, old Rs 100 notes. Several customers withdrawing money from banks confirmed this. Customers who have withdrawn Rs 100 notes are not releasing them for daily transactions. Hoarding has ensured that the central bank is being forced to release old scrapped notes to the general public again.
The lack of technicians is the bigger problem.Read more.

The Black Friday Heist: Financial phishing increases during holiday season

The number of financial phishing attacks is expected to rise during the Holiday season which starts unofficially on so-called Black Friday and continues through Cyber Monday and Christmas.

Retrospective research by Kaspersky Lab specialists shows that, over the last few years, the holiday period was marked by an increase in phishing and other types of attacks, which suggests that the pattern will be repeated this year.

A peak season for sales is obviously also a peak hunting season for criminals: retailers offer lots of hard-to-resist deals and people plan on spending money on gifts for themselves, their friends and relatives. So, while e-commerce customers are making wishes for the upcoming sales, the retailers themselves are preparing their stores for a massive rise in the number of visitors, and financial infrastructure owners - banks and payment systems - are getting ready for a huge increase in the number and value of transactions; cybercriminals are preparing too.

At least, that was the case in previous years.

As Kaspersky Lab threat statistics shows, in 2014 and 2015 the proportion of phishing pages that hunt financial data (credit cards details) detected by the company during Q4 (which covers the holiday period) was around 9 percentage points higher than the average for the year. In particular, the result for financial phishing in all of 2014 was 28.73%, while the result for Q4 was 38.49%. In 2015, 34.33% of all phishing attacks was financial phishing, while in Q4, that type of phishing was responsible for 43.38% of all attacks.

Holidays influence the type of financial targets that criminals are after. Both in 2014 and 2015 Kaspersky Lab researchers witnessed a significant (several percentage points) increase in phishing attacks against payment systems and online stores. Attacks against banks also grew, but at a lower rate.Read more

Live INDvsENG 2nd

Another set of rules: Govt limits bank exchange from Rs 4,500 to Rs 2,000

It also allowed withdrawal of upto Rs 2.5 lakh from bank accounts for the explicit purpose of weddings

The government, on Thursday, announced another set of changed rules as queues continued to day eight of its demonetisation drive. It reduced the limit of over-the-counter exchange of old notes for new ones to Rs 2,000 per person from Rs 4,500 earlier.

The centre has also given the option to its lower level employees up to Group C to draw an advance of Rs 10,000 from their November salaries.

Besides, it relaxed the weekly withdrawal limits for farmers and Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) traders.

It also allowed withdrawal of up to Rs 2.5 lakh from bank accounts for the explicit purpose of weddings.

“To enable larger number of people to get benefit, with effect from Nov 18 the existing limit of Rs 4,500 will be reduced to Rs 2,000. This will be once per person. The usage of indelible ink continues. The move is to ensure that a larger number of people reach the exchange counters,” Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das said at a media briefing.

To questions that this move implied a shortage of cash with the banks, Das said that that was a wrong assumption and that there was enough money in the system.

Central govt employees can get salary advance in cash

Das said that central government employees up to group C, including those of state-owned companies, military, railways and para-military organisations, will be given the option of taking salary advance up to Rs 10,000 in cash, which will be adjusted against their November salaries.

What's in to for farmers?

Given that crop sowing has slowed down at the commencement of Rabi Season due to a cash crunch, the centre will now also allow farmers farmers to draw Rs 25,000 per week against farm loans sanctioned or Kisan credit cards to meet their expenses. Farmers can also withdraw the same amount per week from their own accounts. Read more.

The government, however, rejected the allegation, saying the move is in the national interest, and has been hailed by the common man.

The Centre asked the opposition to clear its stand on corruption.

The Lok Sabha was adjourned on Wednesday after paying tributes to the members who passed away.

The Congress and the Trinamool Congress parties have sought an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha on Thursday for a discussion on the demonetisation issue.

How can Modi transform India?

Why is Narendra Modi so popular among Indians?

NeelaLohith Penmetsa, Following Modi since 2013. He said..

I become an admirer of Modi ever since he came to the national stage. After learning about him slowly through various sources, he became my superhero and joined my list of idols like Sachin, Rahman etc. These are the people who I admire at a personal level.

Observing Modi I immediately understood that he is a MASTER of presentation and public relations. I believe that’s a great thing because we are living in a generation where presentation is everything. Actions and words can be well thought of but some reactions are instinctive. Such reactions come from a person’s true nature and value system.

I was watching Modi’s town hall meeting on youtube and saw a couple of such reactions from this man.

Context: Modi was felicitating the prize winners of some social governing initiative.

A young girl went up the stage to collect her prize touched Modi’s feet as a sign of great respect. His reaction to this was equally respectful regardless of his age and stature.

Another team went up the stage to meet him. As they were getting ready for their picture taken with the prime minister, Modi accidentally stepped on a person’s foot. He was super quick to apologise immediately both with words and action.

I guess this is one of the reasons why many like him. He behaves like a very normal and simple person even though he is the leader of a BILLION people.

Know more about How can Narendra Modi transform India?

Few years back our former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh invited the then Chief Minister of Gujarat Narendra Modi for a cup of tea. CM Modi, being a very self-respected man did not want to drink free tea. So he decided to give an idea regarding a problem of our country to our PM. The problem is as follows :
A huge portion of the border between India and Pakistan runs through the deserts of Gujarat and Rajasthan. For security from Pakistan we are constructing a fence on this land. But due to the condition of soil the fence keeps on collapsing.
Modi gave a solution to this problem. The solution was to ask the Border Security Force, which having its own technical staff and engineering group is an established organization, to construct solar power parks over this hundreds of square kilometers on the desert. This single task will get the following jobs done:
It will give the Border Security Force some work to do in desert. Thus creating new jobs and eradicating unemployment.
It will solve the problem of energy crisis as it will be a huge source of renewable energy.
It will act as a barrier which will make the job of trespassing in India from Pakistan much difficult solving the problem of security.
Therefore many problems will be solved after getting this job done. This is an example of killing many birds with one shot.

No stay on demonetisation, SC says govt cannot have surgical strike against people

Without issuing any notice to the Centre or the RBI, the bench posted the matter for further hearing on Nov 25

The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to stay the government's notification demonetising Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes but asked it to spell out the steps taken to minimise public inconvenience.

"We will not be granting any stay," a bench comprising Chief Justice TS Thakur and DY Chandrachud said.

The remarks were made after some advocates insisted on a stay.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for one of the petitioners, however, said he was not asking for a stay on the notification but seeking answers from the government about the steps taken to remove public inconvenience.

The bench asked Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi to file an affidavit about the measures already undertaken by the government and the Reserve Bank of India to minimise public inconvenience and also the steps likely to be undertaken in future.

Without issuing any notice to the Centre or the RBI, the bench posted the matter for further hearing on November 25.

During the hearing, the Chief Justice said the objective seems to be laudable "but there is some inconvenience also to the public at large".

The bench also said "You (Centre) can have surgical strike against black money but you cannot have surgical strike against people of the country."

At the outset, the Centre which had filed a caveat in the matter, sought dismissal of the petitions challenging demonetisation on several grounds including that they were "misconceived".

Rohatgi, appearing for the Centre, outlined the idea behind demonetisation and said large number of fake currency has been used to finance terrorism in various parts of the country including in Jammu and Kashmir and northeastern states.

Has demonetisation stopped stone pelting, curbed terror financing in J&K?

In the last few days after PM's daring move there hasn't been stone pelting on security forces.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has hailed the government's demonetisation decision and said it has let to decline in stone-pelting incidents in Jammu and Kashmir.
"Earlier, there were rates: Rs 500 for stone pelting (onsecurity forces in Kashmir) and Rs 1,000 for doing something else. PM has brought terror funding to zero," Parrikar said.
"In the last few days after PM's daring move there hasn't been stone pelting on security forces. I congratulate PM for it," Parrikar said.
According to a report in Deccan Herald, the incidents ofstone pelting have declines in the Valley ever since Prime Minister Narendra Modi scrapped Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes across the country.
While police handouts on the situation in the Valley stated that no incidents of stone-pelting were reported from anywhere in the past few days, officials said a major reason behind the sudden decline in violence was that the "money channels" of inciting violence have been sealed.
In the past, several complaints had cropped up that separatists were paying stone-pelters and other anti-national elements in big currency notes. Apart from taking on corruption, black money; the step by the Modi government has resulted in peace and calm in the Valley.
Security analysts believe that Kashmir will remain largely calm in the coming days as miscreants will run short of money to keep their network operational.
For the last four months, the Valley was brought to a standstill but now things are falling back into place with people carrying out their daily chores, schools being opened and students appearing for exams.
Barring a few law and order incidents at some places, hundreds of vendors put up their stalls at the weekly flea-market in the city on Sunday while banks across Kashmir witnessed a rush of customers in view of the demonitisation of 500 and 1000 currency notes, bringing some semblance of normalcy in the unrest-hit Valley.
Normalcy ceased to exist in Kashmir due to unrest triggered by the killing of Hizbul Majhideen militant Burhan Wani since July 8.
However, there has been increased movement of people and public transport, except buses, in Srinagar in the last month. Apart from private vehicles, auto-rickshaws and inter- district cabs were also plying in large numbers.
Defying separatists' call for protest, 95 per cent students appeared for class 12th board exams in Kashmir on Monday. About 94.88 per cent of the total 31,964 students appeared in the examination, an official of Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (BOSE), which conducts the examinations, said.(more)
